Left handed people have always had a reputation for thinking quicker than those, who are right handed. While this does not necessarily mean that left handed people are smarter than their right handed counterparts, what it does mean is that when it comes to tasks such as playing video games and sports, they generally respond faster. The reason for this, according to researchers, is that the connection between the two hemispheres is stronger in left handed persons than it is the other way around. Another matter where left handed people best right handed individuals is in the overall percentage of the brain that is used. Researchers have established that multi-tasking just comes easier for these persons.

The assessment standards that researchers use include putting the reaction time of left handed and right handed people to the test. There are any number of ways that this can be performed. One includes having the participants respond to flashing stimuli in a stationary environment. The faster responses almost without exception will favor the left handed subjects. Of course, to draw a broad conclusion about such a study, researchers must test in multiple subjects. Generally a cross section of 80-100 is preferred to draw any verifiable results.

The results for left handed people can be seen in the advantages that they possess over the other side. Sporting competitions such as soccer come more naturally for these individuals, because their left handed tendencies translate to other areas of the body including the feet. The tendency that they have to cross over and use both sides of the brain gives them the advantage in physical competition. Being able to use both legs, for instance, makes them more of a shooting hazard on the pitch. Likewise, boxers, who can change styles from right handed to southpaw keep their opponents guessing.

The workforce of the 21st Century also tends to favor left handed people because technology has made it easier for them to carry on multiple tasks at a time—in fact, many companies even require it of their employees. While there is still something to be said for the level of knowledge in a required field, those with the ability to manage several duties at once are far more likely to get ahead than those, who must finish a task before moving on to another. While left handedness does not mean guaranteed success, it clearly gives this group a distinct advantage over others.
