The Sinister Tale Of Left Handers
People can be divided into two broad categories, depending on what they choose to be their dominant hand: left handers and right handers. It is a fact that the majority of the individuals worldwide have the tendency to choose the right hand as their dominant hand, leaving a small but significant 13% of left handed people. Scientists are continuously trying to determine what causes individuals to choose the preference for a dominant hand rather than the other and moreover they are uncertain whether being left handed is a good thing or a bad one.Past research has showed that left handed people are most likely to suffer from accidents than right handed individuals. This is some say a result of the fact that a left hander is clumsier than a right hander. Yet, studies showed that this myth is not true. The truth is that left handers are not clumsier but they are forced to used things that have been designed for right handers and this might be what causes the ‘clumsiness’. Moreover, a study with baseball players as subjects revealed that left handed players died earlier than right handed ones. This is thus the sinister part of the story.
On the other end of the spectrum, specialists cannot agree if being left handed is such a disaster. It seems that four out of the last six American presidents were left handed, most of the talented athletes were or are left handed and most geniuses or artists as well. This is no miracle given that left handed people have their right side of the brain as their dominant one which makes them more creative and better in things that are not exact science. Thus, it seems that left handers could be leading the world, at least after they can adapt to the many things that have been designed for the use of the opposite side.
